Dual Xeon E5-2640 v3 2U server

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon E5-2640 v3 processors running at 2.6 GHz with a 3.4 GHz turbo frequency. Each CPU provides eight cores, giving sixteen cores total for multi-threaded workloads. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4-2133 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. It is aimed at midsize and large enterprises running virtualisation, databases, VDI or high-performance computing nodes.

Upgrades from single-socket

Moving from a single-socket platform doubles the core count and the memory bandwidth available to the CPU pair. Confirm the rack can accommodate a 2U chassis with the included ready rails and that the facility supplies redundant power for the two 750 W platinum power supplies. The front bay population uses ten 2.5-inch SAS drives; ensure any additional drives match the SAS interface and 12 Gb/s controller capability. Memory expansion uses DDR4 registered ECC modules up to the 1.5 TB maximum across twenty-four slots. iDRAC 8 Enterprise requires a dedicated management network connection for remote console access.
