Dual 14-core Xeon server for dense storage workloads

The PowerEdge R730xd packs two Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4 processors running at 2.4 GHz with a 3.3 GHz turbo frequency. Fourteen cores per socket deliver 28 threads for parallel tasks such as virtual desktop infrastructure, databases and data-warehouse nodes. Registered ECC DDR4 memory totals 512 GB across 16 modules, leaving eight slots open for expansion up to the platform maximum of 1.5 TB.

Sustained throughput from 24 enterprise SATA SSDs

Twenty-four 800 GB solid-state drives sit behind a PERC H730 controller with 1 GB cache and battery backup, supporting RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. The 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA link keeps each drive at its native 6 Gb/s SATA rate during long sequential writes, avoiding the throttle seen on smaller arrays. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies share the load so neither unit runs near its thermal limit under continuous I/O.

2U rack depth and 6 Gb/s SATA set the practical

The 2U chassis holds 24 hot-swap 2.5-inch bays, so capacity scales only by swapping drives for larger models of the same form factor. Network I/O tops out at two 10 Gb SFP+ ports and two 1 GbE ports on the X520/I350 daughter card, limiting east-west traffic for clustered workloads. iDRAC 8 Enterprise provides out-of-band management but does not add compute resources.
