The Dell PowerEdge R730XD is a 2U rack server built for storage-dense workloads. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2630v3 eight-core processor running at 2.4GHz and 128GB of DDR4 memory. The chassis supports up to twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug drive bays for SAS or SATA drives. Redundant 750W power supplies and iDRAC8 remote management come standard.

Storage controller and drive capacity

The integrated PERC H330 controller provides 12Gbps SAS connectivity and supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60. The system can address a maximum raw capacity of 52TB across the twelve bays. No drives or drive trays are included, so buyers must source compatible SAS or SATA disks separately. The DVD-ROM drive is the only media device installed.

Memory ceiling and expansion limit

Installed memory is 128GB DDR4 and the platform maximum is also 128GB with this processor configuration. All twenty-four DIMM slots are populated, leaving no room for further memory upgrades without replacing modules. A second processor would be required to access the additional twelve slots and reach the 1536GB platform maximum.
