The PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors running at 2.4 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. Twenty cores per socket deliver 40 threads for virtualisation, database or compute workloads that need high core density in a compact form factor.

PERC H730P controller with battery-backed cache

The H730P 2 GB controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through, giving flexibility for redundancy or capacity. Battery-backed write cache protects in-flight data during power loss. The X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, and iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides full out-of-band management.

512 GB DDR4 across 16 slots with 3 TB ceiling

Installed memory uses 16 × 32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC modules, leaving eight DIMM slots free for expansion up to the 3 TB maximum. Eight 600 GB 10 K SAS drives occupy every 2.5-inch bay, so additional internal storage requires external enclosures; the dual 750 W platinum supplies handle the current load with redundancy.
