The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for compute-intensive workloads. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6134 processors each run eight cores at 3.2 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system targets virtualisation hosts, database nodes and high-performance applications that demand dual-socket density in a compact form factor.

768 GB DDR4 and dual 800 GB SSDs

Memory is populated across all 24 slots with 32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC modules, reaching the installed 768 GB capacity. The PERC H730P controller manages the two 800 GB SATA SSDs and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with its 2 GB cache. Memory headroom extends to 3 TB when larger modules are fitted, while the eight 2.5-inch bays allow further storage expansion.

LGA 3647 platform and 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA interface

The dual LGA 3647 sockets limit the server to a maximum of two processors, so no further CPU scaling is possible within this chassis. Storage throughput is bound by the 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA interface on the H730P controller, and networking uses a quad-port daughter card providing two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections. Remote management is handled by iDRAC 9 Enterprise.
