The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6134 processors, each running at 3.2 GHz with eight cores. It ships with 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. The system targets organisations that need dense compute and memory capacity in a standard rack footprint.

Storage and Network Limits

Eight 2.5-inch drive trays accept SATA or SAS drives and connect to a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Networking is handled by an Intel X520/I350 daughter card providing two 1 GbE ports and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports. The 24 memory slots allow expansion up to 3 TB of DDR4.

Upgrade Path from Single-Socket Platforms

This server replaces single-socket 1U or 2U units when workloads outgrow one CPU and 24 DIMM slots. The jump is worth it for virtualisation hosts, database nodes or render farms that need the second Xeon and the full 3 TB memory ceiling.
