The PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors. Each chip provides 16 cores at 2.6 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system targets organisations that need dense compute for virtualisation, database or high-performance workloads in a standard rack footprint.

Sustained multi-core throughput

With 32 total cores and 256 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory, the server maintains high throughput across parallel tasks. The dual 750 W platinum power supplies and redundant hot-swap design keep all components fed during continuous load without throttling or single-point failure.

Storage and networking ceiling

The PERC H730P controller manages eight 400 GB SATA SSDs over a 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA backplane, supporting RAID levels up to 60. Network I/O tops out at two 10 Gb SFP+ and two 1 GbE ports on the X520/I350 daughter card, limiting east-west traffic to those speeds.
