The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors running at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores each. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. The system includes a PERC H730P 2 GB storage controller and two 800 GB SATA SSDs installed in the eight 2.5-inch drive bays.

2U rack limits drive count and card height

The 2U chassis provides eight 2.5-inch hot-swap bays, so total internal storage is capped at the number of drives that fit in those slots. Full-height accelerator cards cannot be installed because the form factor only accepts low-profile expansion cards. Redundant 750 W power supplies and ready rails are included for standard rack mounting.

3 TB maximum memory defines upgrade ceiling

The Intel C620 chipset supports up to 3 TB of DDR4 across 24 DIMM slots, setting the hard limit for future memory expansion. Buyers who need more than 3 TB of RAM must choose a different platform because this server cannot exceed that capacity.
