The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server fitted with twenty-four 2.5-inch drive bays, dual Xeon Platinum 8160 processors running at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores each, and 128 GB of DDR4 ECC memory. It targets organisations that need high local capacity in a compact form factor for software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure or service-provider workloads. The platform supports up to two processors and a maximum of 3 TB of memory across twenty-four DIMM slots.

Included controller, networking and drives

A PERC H730P 2 GB SAS controller provides RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Twenty-four enterprise 300 GB 10 K SAS drives are pre-installed, delivering raw capacity and performance for demanding storage tiers. An Intel X520/I350 quad-port daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections for flexible network topology. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full remote management, while redundant 1100 W platinum power supplies, ready rails and a front bezel complete the package.

Verify rack space, power and memory plans

Confirm the rack can accommodate a 2U chassis and that the facility provides suitable power connections for dual 1100 W supplies. The system uses DDR4 registered ECC modules only; other memory generations will not fit. All twenty-four drive bays are populated with SAS drives, so any expansion requires replacing existing units or adding external enclosures. The board has two LGA 3647 sockets, both occupied, leaving no room for additional CPUs.
