Purpose-built storage server

The PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server designed for workloads that prioritise dense capacity over raw compute. Two Xeon Gold 6148 processors provide 20 cores each at 2.4 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo, while 768 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory fills all 24 DIMM slots. Twelve 3.5-inch drive bays ship populated with 6 TB enterprise SATA disks, making the platform a natural fit for software-defined storage, backup targets or virtual desktop infrastructure.

Storage interface limits

The PERC H730P controller manages the twelve SATA drives through a 12 Gb/s SAS backplane, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Because the installed drives are 7.2 K rpm SATA units, sustained throughput is bounded by mechanical latency and the 6 Gb/s link speed of each disk. The controller’s 2 GB cache and battery-backed write-back can absorb bursts, but random IOPS will remain typical of high-capacity hard drives rather than solid-state media.

Memory ceiling decides fit

The system ships with every one of its 24 DDR4 slots occupied by 32 GB modules, reaching the 768 GB installed total. The Intel C620 chipset permits a maximum of 3 TB, so further expansion is physically impossible without removing existing DIMMs. Buyers whose workloads demand more than 768 GB of RAM must therefore look at a different chassis or a platform with a higher slot count.
