The PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for workloads that demand high drive density alongside dual-socket performance. It suits software-defined storage clusters, virtual desktop infrastructure hosts and service-provider environments where capacity and compute must share the same chassis.

Controller and networking expand capability

The PERC H730P controller with 2GB cache enables RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through, letting administrators tune redundancy and throughput for the installed 800GB SATA SSDs. A quad-port daughter card adds two 1GbE and two 10Gb SFP+ links, while iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides full out-of-band management.

2U form factor constrains expansion

Only two processors are supported, so CPU scaling stops at the installed pair of 12-core Xeon Gold 5118 chips running at 2.3GHz with 3.2GHz turbo. Memory tops out at 3TB across 24 DDR4 slots, and the 2.5-inch bay layout limits drive choices to SATA or SAS models that fit the 24-bay backplane.
