Dense 2U storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd packs 24 drive bays and dual Xeon Gold 6142 processors into a 2U rack chassis. It targets organisations that need high local capacity for software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure or service-provider workloads. Two 16-core CPUs at 2.6 GHz provide 32 total cores for parallel tasks.

Rail kit and cabling effort

The included sliding rails mount in standard square-hole racks, but the 2U depth and 24 front drive carriers make the unit heavy; two people or a lift are advisable. Cable routing for 24 SAS drives plus quad-port networking can congest the front bezel, so plan tie-down points before sliding the server in. The H730P controller battery must be seated correctly or the array will not initialise.

SAS 12 Gb/s bus ceiling

The PERC H730P connects every drive over a 12 Gb/s SAS fabric, so aggregate throughput tops out at that link speed regardless of drive count. RAID 5 or 6 rebuilds across 2.4 TB 10 K spindles can take many hours, during which the array runs degraded. The 3 TB memory ceiling limits very large in-memory databases, and the two-socket maximum prevents future CPU expansion.
