The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for storage-heavy workloads. It carries two Xeon Silver 4110 processors at 2.1 GHz with eight cores each. The system ships with 768 GB of DDR4 memory across 24 slots and a PERC H730P controller managing 24 SAS drives. It targets software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure and service-provider deployments.

Upgrade from limited-bay platforms

The 24-bay 2.5-inch chassis replaces servers that cap out at eight or twelve drives. The jump is worth it when capacity and throughput must grow together without adding rack units. Dual 1100 W platinum supplies and the H730P with 2 GB cache support RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. A quad-port X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for fast replication.
