The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server fitted with four Intel Xeon Gold 5120 processors, each running at 2.2 GHz with 14 cores. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 48 slots and a PERC H730P RAID controller with 2 GB cache. Dual 1600 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise provide redundant power and remote management out of the box.

Scales vertically, not horizontally

This server suits workloads that benefit from a single large memory pool and many cores under one OS licence — in-memory databases, virtualisation hosts or ERP instances. Buyers who need more than eight 2.5-inch drive bays or who prefer scale-out clusters with smaller nodes should look elsewhere. The quad-port 1 GbE and 10 Gb SFP+ daughter card covers typical data-centre networking without extra cards.

Maximum memory capacity of 6 TB

With 48 DDR4 slots the system supports up to 6 TB of registered ECC memory, so the 64 GB installed is a starting point for memory-intensive applications. The PERC H730P handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through for the eight hot-swap trays. Four processor sockets are already populated at the 5120 specification.
