The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server populated with four Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each running at 2.6 GHz with 16 cores. It includes 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages the two installed 400 GB SATA SSDs and provides RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 support. Dual 1600 W redundant power supplies, iDRAC9 Enterprise, quad-port networking and rails are fitted.

This server targets workloads that benefit from 64 total cores and a 6 TB memory ceiling in a 3U form factor, such as virtualisation clusters, in-memory databases or high-throughput transaction processing. Organisations needing only one or two sockets, lower core counts or a tower chassis will find the capacity excessive and the rackmount format unsuitable. Buyers who require more than eight 2.5-inch drive bays or a different network interface should evaluate other platforms.

48 DDR4 slots define the memory ceiling

The system board provides 48 DDR4 DIMM slots supporting up to 6 TB of registered ECC memory, so the installed 256 GB can be expanded substantially without replacing the server. The LGA 3647 sockets are already fully populated with the maximum of four processors, so CPU upgrades are not possible. The PERC H730P controller and the eight-bay 2.5-inch backplane set the storage connectivity and drive-count limits for this configuration.
