The unit ships as a bare processor without heatsink, fan or retail packaging, so the builder must supply a compatible LGA 771 cooler and apply thermal interface material. The absence of bundled cooling means mechanical clearance and mounting hole alignment must be verified against the server chassis before installation. The processor runs a 7.2 GT/s QPI link, which caps the maximum inter-socket bandwidth between two CPUs in a dual-socket server board.
It fits an LGA 771 socket and ships without a heatsink or fan, so a compatible server cooler with LGA 771 mounting holes must be sourced separately.
Place the CPU into the LGA 771 socket, close the retention lever, then apply thermal paste before mounting the separate cooler; skipping the paste causes overheating.
