PCIe 4.0 Lane Reality

Third generation Ryzen CPUs unlock PCIe 4.0 x16 or x8/x8 operation on the two full length slots, while second generation CPUs limit those slots to PCIe 3.0 speeds. Three M.2 sockets share Gen4 x4 bandwidth only when a compatible processor is installed, otherwise they fall back to Gen3.
