Compact audio board for Raspberry Pi projects

The Pimoroni PIM485 Pirate Audio Speaker is a fully-assembled mini HAT-format development board that adds mono audio and a colour display to a Raspberry Pi. It integrates a MAX98357A DAC/amplifier chip driving an attached 1W 8-ohm speaker with push-fit terminals. Four tactile buttons provide hardware playback control for standalone projects.

1.3 inch 240x240 display and 1W mono output

The ST7789-driven IPS LCD measures 1.3 inches at 240 by 240 pixels and shows album art or simple graphics. Audio output is limited to the onboard 1-watt mono speaker, which suits desktop-scale experiments but will not fill a room. Builders needing louder sound or stereo output must add external amplification beyond this board.

Mini HAT footprint with push-fit speaker terminals

The board sits directly on the Raspberry Pi GPIO header in mini HAT format, requiring no soldering for the core functions. Push-fit terminals allow the included speaker to be swapped or repositioned without tools. The four buttons and display free the Pi’s own USB and HDMI ports for other peripherals while keeping the audio interface self-contained.

Will the 1.3" 240x240 display and MAX98357A amplifier work with my original Raspberry Pi 1 Model B?

The board uses the standard 40-pin GPIO header found on all Raspberry Pi models since the Model B+, so it is electrically compatible with the original Pi 1 Model B+ and later boards, but not the very first 26-pin Model B.

How can I verify the ST7789 display and MAX98357A audio are functioning after I run the Pirate Audio installer?

Run the supplied examples; the screen should show album art or a spectrum analyser in 240x240 colour, the four tactile buttons should navigate menus, and the attached 1W speaker should play test tones or streamed audio without distortion.

Does the PIM485 board ship with a speaker already connected, or do I need to buy one separately?
