M.2 SATA B+M/B Key Enclosure

The Orico enclosure accepts a single M.2 NGFF SATA solid-state drive with a B+M or B key and presents it over a USB 3.1 Type-C link. It supports drive lengths of 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 up to a maximum capacity of 2 TB. The aluminium and plastic shell provides passive heat dissipation without a fan. It is aimed at users who want to repurpose an existing SATA M.2 drive as portable storage for PCs, laptops, smartphones, smart TVs, routers or a PS4.

Upgrade from internal SATA slot

This enclosure replaces a motherboard M.2 SATA slot or a 2.5-inch SATA caddy when you need to move the drive between devices. The jump is worth it if you have a spare M.2 NGFF SATA SSD and want external access without opening a chassis. It does not support M.2 NVMe PCIe drives, M.2 PCIe AHCI drives or mSATA drives, so buyers with those modules must choose a different enclosure. The included USB Type-A to Type-C cable is 0.15 m long.

Sustained transfer with UASP

Under continuous workloads the enclosure uses UASP acceleration on the USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface to deliver up to 440 MB/s read and write speeds. The aluminium body acts as a heatsink to keep the drive cool during long copy sessions. There is no active cooling, so thermal performance depends on ambient airflow. The USB 3.1 Type-C connector is reversible for convenient insertion.

Questions about this item

Which M.2 form factors fit the 108mm by 29.5mm by 13.5mm enclosure?

It accepts 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 length M.2 SATA drives.

How is the drive secured inside the aluminium shell without a screw supplied in the .15m cable kit?

Slide the SSD into the B+M key slot, then use the retention screw from your laptop or motherboard to lock it down.

When should the thermal pad between the controller and the aluminium case be replaced?

Replace it if the pad becomes brittle or if sustained transfers throttle below the 440MB/s UASP ceiling.
