The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for dense compute clusters. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6230 processors deliver 40 total cores at 2.1 GHz base and 3.9 GHz turbo. The unit ships with 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 16 slots and a PERC H330 controller managing two 960 GB SATA SSDs. A Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb daughter card handles networking.

Upgrade from single-socket

The jump makes sense when workloads exceed the core count or memory ceiling of a single-processor blade. Adding the second Gold 6230 raises the ceiling to 40 cores and 512 GB, while the chassis supports up to 56 cores per server and 1.5 TB of DDR4. The PERC H330 enables RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 for local redundancy. NVMe support in the platform allows faster storage tiers later.

Slides into MX or M1000e chassis with iDRAC9

Installation is a matter of inserting the blade into a compatible Dell PowerEdge MX or M1000e enclosure and cabling the fabric modules. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides out-of-band management for firmware updates and remote console access before the OS loads. Common issues include mismatched firmware between blade and chassis, missing fabric licences for the 10 Gb ports, and forgetting that front bezel and ready rails are not included.
