Compact rack server for entry workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R430 fits a single Intel Xeon E5-2603 v3 six-core processor at 1.6GHz with 24GB of DDR4 memory in a 1U chassis. It targets small-business virtualization, file serving or light database tasks where density matters more than core count. The system ships without an operating system.

Redundant power and hot-plug drive bays

A 550W redundant supply keeps the server running if one module fails. Eight 2.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives; three 600GB 15K SAS drives are installed behind a PERC H730 controller with 1GB cache supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Four 1GbE ports and two PCIe 3.0 slots handle networking and expansion. Remote management uses iDRAC8 Express with Lifecycle Controller.

Upgrade from tower or older 2U gear

The R430 replaces a tower server or an earlier 2U rack unit when rack space and power efficiency become priorities. The jump is worthwhile when you need hot-plug redundancy and iDRAC remote control in a single rack unit but can work within the 24GB memory ceiling and single-processor configuration. Buyers who need more than 12 DIMM slots or a second CPU should look elsewhere.
