The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rackmount server system built for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors, each offering 12 cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo, and 128 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules.

Sustained-load behaviour

Redundant 750 W platinum-efficiency power supplies and hot-swap redundant power help maintain uptime under continuous demand. The PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for sustained storage throughput, while iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides remote monitoring and management during extended operations.

Installation and common issues

Ready Rails and a front bezel are included for rack mounting. Eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drive trays are present but no drives are installed, so storage must be sourced separately. The quad-port network daughter card delivers two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections. Buyers who need pre-populated storage or a different drive form factor should plan additional parts.
