The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon Silver 4110 processors running at 2.1 GHz with eight cores each. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. The platform targets organisations that need dense compute for virtualisation, database or high-performance workloads in a standard rack footprint.

PERC H730P controller and quad-port networking

The integrated PERC H730P RAID controller provides 2 GB cache and battery-backed write caching with support for RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through. An Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for flexible LAN and storage networking. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full remote management and monitoring without an operating system.

24 DIMM slots scale to 3 TB memory

The chassis holds 24 DDR4 slots so the installed 128 GB can grow to a maximum of 3 TB for memory-intensive applications. Eight 2.5-inch drive trays accept SATA or SAS drives but no drives are included. Only two processor sockets exist and both are populated, so CPU upgrades are not possible. Buyers needing more than eight drive bays or additional CPU sockets should consider a different platform.
