Capacity and Compute

This new Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4 processors. Each CPU provides 14 cores at 2.4 GHz with a 3.3 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. Eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives connect to a PERC H730 controller with 1 GB cache.

Virtualisation and Database Fit

The dual 14-core CPUs and large memory capacity suit virtualisation hosts, database nodes and VDI deployments. Quad-port networking with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links supports segmented traffic. Buyers who need more than 24 DIMM slots or more than eight 2.5-inch drive bays should look elsewhere.

Memory Ceiling

The platform supports a maximum of 1.5 TB of DDR4 across 24 slots, so the installed 256 GB leaves substantial headroom for growth. The PERC H730 handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 8 Enterprise complete the package.
