The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built for midsize and large enterprise workloads. Two Intel Xeon E5-2699 v4 processors run at 2.2 GHz with 3.6 GHz turbo across 22 cores each. The system ships with 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 16 modules.

Suited for virtualisation and database nodes

This configuration targets virtual desktop infrastructure, data warehousing and high-performance computing nodes that need high core counts and large memory capacity. The PERC H730 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with a 1 GB cache. Buyers who need more than two processors or more than 1.5 TB of memory should consider a different platform.

2.5-inch SAS drive bays with H730 controller

Eight 2.5-inch bays accept SAS or SATA drives and the installed pair of 300 GB 10K SAS disks provide a starting point. The H730 mini controller handles 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA traffic with battery-backed cache. What comes with the server and what must be purchased separately?

The unit ships with two Xeon E5-2699 v4 processors, 512GB DDR4 memory, PERC H730 controller, two 300GB SAS drives, X520/I350 quad-port network card, iDRAC8 Enterprise, two 750W power supplies, bezel and rails. Additional drives or memory are not included.

Should I choose the 512GB DDR4 configuration or add more memory later?

The system has 24 slots and supports up to 1.5TB. The current 512GB uses 16 modules of 32GB at 2400MHz, leaving 8 free slots for future expansion if workloads grow.
