The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits 24 x 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives in a 2U form factor. It ships with a single Xeon E5-2630v3 eight-core processor at 2.4 GHz and 64 GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots. The Perc H730 RAID controller supports RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60 with 1 GB cache. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies are included.

Sustained load behaviour

The H730 controller maintains 12 Gbps throughput to the drive backplane while the 15 K SAS spindles deliver consistent IOPS under write-heavy RAID 5 or RAID 6 workloads. Dual 750 W supplies share load evenly, so a single unit failure does not throttle CPU or disk performance. iDRAC8 provides out-of-band thermal monitoring and power capping without host OS involvement.

The server uses two 750W redundant hot-swap power supplies. Actual heat output and power draw depend on workload, processor load and how many of the 24 drive bays are populated.

What else must I already own for the R730XD with a single E5-2630v3 and 64GB DDR4 to operate?

You need an operating system, a rack with rails, a network switch for the four 1GbE ports and SAS or SATA drives to fill any of the 24 hot-plug bays.

Will the 12Gbps H730 RAID controller and 6Gbps SAS drives work with older 3Gbps SAS or SATA disks I may keep?

The H730 controller supports SAS and SATA drives. The installed 300GB 15K drives run at 6Gbps; older 3Gbps disks will operate at their native speed when added to the 24-bay backplane.
