The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits 24 hot-plug 2.5-inch bays into a 2U chassis, driven by a single 10-core Xeon E5-2650 v3 at 2.3 GHz and 96 GB of DDR4. It targets teams that need high drive density for databases, backup targets or software-defined storage without stepping up to a larger rack footprint.

Tool-less drive carriers

The 24 front bays accept SAS or SATA drives on tool-less carriers, and the H730 controller with 1 GB cache sits in its own PCIe 3.0 slot so no general-purpose slot is consumed. Installers must add their own drives and trays; the server ships without them. A second processor can be added later to unlock the remaining 12 DIMM slots and additional PCIe lanes.

PCIe 3.0 and 12 Gbps SAS set the throughput ceiling

Six standard PCIe 3.0 slots plus the dedicated RAID slot provide expansion for networking or HBAs, while the H730 tops out at 12 Gbps per SAS lane. The four onboard 1 GbE ports handle basic connectivity; 10 GbE requires an optional NDC. Maximum supported memory reaches 1536 GB when both CPU sockets are populated, but the single-processor configuration shipped here is limited to 96 GB across 12 slots.
