The Dell PowerEdge R740 fits two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors, each with 16 cores running at 2.1 GHz and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. 768 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory is installed across 24 slots. The system targets virtualisation hosts, database nodes and high-performance computing clusters that need dense processing power in a standard rack footprint.

SAS controller and network daughter card define

The integrated PERC H730P controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode over a 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA interface. Storage is restricted to the eight 2.5-inch drive bays supplied with two 300 GB 10K SAS disks. Network connectivity is provided by an Intel X520/I350 daughter card offering two 1 GbE ports and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, so additional NICs require a free PCIe slot.

Verify rack depth, power feeds

The 2U chassis requires a cabinet deep enough for the ready rails and front bezel supplied. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies need two independent PDU circuits for full redundancy. Memory currently occupies all 24 DIMM slots, so any capacity increase beyond 768 GB means replacing existing 32 GB modules with larger DDR4 registered ECC parts up to the 3 TB platform maximum.
