This new Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack system built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors. Each CPU delivers 20 cores at a base frequency of 2.4 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo boost, providing 40 threads in total for virtualisation, database or high-performance computing tasks.

The platform ships with 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 DIMM slots, leaving eight slots free for expansion toward the 3 TB maximum. Organisations needing a dense 1U form factor or a single-socket configuration should evaluate other chassis designs.

PERC H730P controller

Storage connectivity runs through a Dell PERC H730P RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Eight front-accessible 2.5-inch drive trays accept SAS or SATA media, while the X520/I350 daughter card adds two 10 Gb SFP+ and two 1 GbE ports.

The unit includes eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA trays and the PERC H730P controller but no hard drives are installed; you must add your own drives.

Is the installed 512GB DDR4 the maximum this chassis can hold or can I expand later?

The board has 24 DDR4 slots and supports up to 3TB, so the current 16 modules of 32GB leave eight empty slots for future expansion.

What real throughput can I expect from the X520/I350 network card in this server?
