The PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors running at 2.1 GHz with 12 cores each. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules. The system targets virtualisation hosts, database workloads and compute clusters that need dense two-socket performance in a standard rack footprint.

Sustained load behaviour

Twelve cores per socket at 2.1 GHz base frequency with 3.0 GHz turbo provide consistent throughput for multi-threaded applications. The PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache and battery backup maintains write performance during extended I/O streams across the eight 2.4 TB 10 K SAS drives. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies keep the platform running without interruption during maintenance or a single supply failure.

Build, connectivity and daily operation

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays and the H730P support RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode for software-defined storage. The Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for flexible network segmentation. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full remote power, console and firmware management without physical access, while included ready rails and a front bezel simplify rack installation and cable routing.
