Half-height blade server for virtualisation and HPC

The Dell EMC PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade that fits the PowerEdge MX and M1000e chassis. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6230 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz base with 3.9 GHz turbo across 20 cores. The system includes 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 slots, leaving room to reach the 1.5 TB maximum. A Dell PERC H330 controller manages up to two 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives, and a Broadcom 57810S-K card provides dual-port 10 Gb Ethernet connectivity.

Sustained multi-core throughput

Under continuous load both Xeon Gold 6230 CPUs maintain their 20-core configuration without the thermal throttling common in smaller blades. The 512 GB DDR4 ECC array feeds all 40 threads with error-corrected bandwidth, keeping virtual machines and HPC jobs stable over long runs. The PERC H330 supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 so storage redundancy stays active during rebuilds. Dual 10 Gb ports sustain east-west traffic between blades without saturating a single link.

Blade insertion requires compatible chassis

Installation means sliding the half-height module into an approved PowerEdge MX or M1000e enclosure that supplies power, cooling and the I/O fabric for the 57810S-K daughter card. The H330 controller only recognises drives seated in the two supplied 2.5-inch caddies; loose drives will not connect. iDRAC9 Enterprise is pre-licensed but needs a dedicated management network cable and IP configuration before remote console access works. No operating system is installed, so the first boot must target an installation media source.
