The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for data-centre density. It arrives with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8260 processors, each running at 2.4 GHz with a 3.9 GHz turbo frequency. The system provides 24 cores per CPU and 32 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 8 GB modules. It is suited to virtualisation, private cloud and high-performance computing clusters.

Upgrade from Single-Socket Blades

This configuration replaces single-socket blades or older dual-socket generations where core count and memory bandwidth limit consolidation ratios. The jump is worth it when workloads need the full 56-core ceiling per server and up to 1.5 TB of DDR4 capacity across 16 slots. The PERC H330 controller adds RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 for local SAS or SATA drives installed in the two 2.5-inch caddies supplied.

Chassis and Network Constraints

The M640 only operates inside a PowerEdge MX or M1000e enclosure, so buyers without that chassis cannot deploy it. Network I/O is fixed to the Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb blade daughter card; no additional mezzanine cards can be added. The Matrox G200 graphics core provides basic 8 MB video output for management consoles only. Front bezel and ready rails are not included.
