Compact 1U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R430 fits a single Intel Xeon E5-2603 v3 six-core 1.6GHz processor and 24GB of DDR4 memory into a 1U chassis. It ships with three 300GB 15K SAS drives and a PERC H730 RAID controller with 1GB cache. The system includes a 550W redundant power supply, DVD-ROM and four 1GbE ports.

SAS and PCIe 3.0 limits

Eight 2.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives, but the backplane and H730 controller operate at 6Gbps and 12Gbps respectively. Only two PCIe 3.0 slots are available for add-in cards. Maximum installed memory is capped at 24GB in this configuration, though the platform supports up to 384GB across 12 DIMM slots when a second processor is added.

Capacity and headroom

The three 300GB 15K drives deliver fast access for operating system and primary workloads, while RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60 provides flexibility. Storage can scale to 16TB across all bays. Memory headroom ends at 24GB unless a second CPU is installed, and expansion slots run out after two cards.
