The Samsung 980 1TB drive uses a PCI-Express 3.0 x4 interface with NVMe 1.4 protocol. It is built for consumer workloads such as gaming and heavy graphics workflows. The controller is named Pablo and the memory is V-NAND MLC.
Intelligent TurboWrite 2.0 enlarges the TurboWrite region up to 5.5 times to maintain write speeds. Full Power Mode via Magician 6.3 keeps the drive at peak performance continuously. Host Memory Buffer links host DRAM directly to the controller to overcome DRAMless constraints.
Nickel coating on the controller and a heat spreader label on the NAND provide thermal control. Samsung's thermal algorithm manages heat to minimise performance fluctuations during extended use. Idle power consumption is 45 mW.
