Half-height blade server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for high-density data centre deployments. It fits into PowerEdge MX and M1000e chassis, making it suitable for virtualisation, private cloud and high-performance computing workloads. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6154 processors deliver 18 cores each at 3.0 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. The system ships with 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 slots.

Storage and network limits inside a blade

The integrated Dell PERC S140 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 for SATA and NVMe drives. Only two 2.5-inch drive bays are available per blade, restricting local capacity to a pair of SAS or SSDs. Network connectivity is provided by a Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb daughter card. The Matrox G200 GPU with 8 MB video memory handles basic console output only.

Memory ceiling decides the fit

Maximum supported memory is 2 TB of DDR4, which is four times the installed 512 GB. Buyers who need more memory headroom for large-scale virtualisation or in-memory databases must plan for additional DIMMs. The LGA 3647 socket and two-processor limit are fixed, so CPU upgrades beyond the current Xeon Scalable generation are not possible. This blade is not for workloads requiring more than two sockets or local storage beyond two drives.
