Suited for Scale-Out Workloads, Not Standalone Use

This blade fits organisations running virtualisation clusters, private clouds or high-performance computing grids that can populate a PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis. It includes a Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb network daughter card and iDRAC9 Enterprise for remote management. Buyers without a compatible blade enclosure, or who need a tower or rack-mount server with integrated rails and bezel, should look at a different form factor.

Two-CPU Limit Defines Maximum Density

The M640 supports a maximum of two processors, so the installed pair of 24-core Xeon Platinum 8260 CPUs already reaches the blade's ceiling. Memory can grow to 1.5 TB using the 16 available DDR4 slots, and the storage controller accepts SATA or SAS drives including NVMe options. If a workload demands more than two sockets per node, this platform cannot satisfy it.
