Blade server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade that fits into PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis. It ships with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8260 processors, each running at 2.4 GHz with a 3.9 GHz turbo frequency and 24 cores. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 16 slots. This configuration targets virtualisation, private cloud and high-performance computing workloads.

Storage and network limits

The on-board PERC H330 controller supports SATA and SAS drives with RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50. Two 2.5-inch 960 GB SATA SSDs are installed in the front bays. The board provides a 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA interface to the backplane. Network connectivity comes from a Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb blade daughter card. The Matrox G200 graphics core with 8 MB video memory handles basic console output only.

Maximum memory capacity decides fit

This blade supports up to 1.5 TB of DDR4 memory when fully populated, well above the 128 GB installed. Buyers who need the full 1.5 TB ceiling must add modules to the remaining slots. Buyers who need more than two processors cannot expand beyond the dual-socket limit. The half-height form factor requires a compatible MX or M1000e enclosure for power, cooling and fabric interconnects.
